Overview

What is a Heathrow taxi transfer?

A Heathrow taxi transfer is a pre-booked private hire journey between London Heathrow (LHR) and an address of your choosing, at a fare agreed before the wheels move. Taxiqo runs these transfers from £75 in a saloon carrying up to four passengers and two large cases.

Heathrow sits 15 miles west of central London along the M4, and the drive takes 45 to 70 minutes depending on the hour you travel. Four passenger terminals are open: Terminal 2 (the Queen's Terminal), Terminal 3, Terminal 4 and Terminal 5. Terminal 1 closed in 2015 and no longer handles flights. Each has its own approach road, its own arrivals hall and its own authorised pickup area, so the terminal you land at changes where your driver waits.

Every journey is driven by a licensed private hire driver in a vehicle plated by Transport for London. Fares include the airport's £7 drop-off charge, road tolls, the congestion charge, ULEZ and VAT. Heathrow enforces that charge with barrierless ANPR cameras, so there's no barrier to pay at and nothing to settle at the kerb.

Below you'll find what a Heathrow transfer costs by destination, how the four terminals differ for pickup, which vehicle suits your group and luggage, what the fare covers, how a car compares against the Heathrow Express and the Piccadilly line, and how to book. The questions at the end cover delays, meeting points, child seats, cancellations and airport-to-airport runs such as a Heathrow to Gatwick transfer.

Why Taxiqo

Why book a Heathrow transfer in advance

Booking ahead removes the two things that go wrong at Heathrow arrivals: the queue and the price. Your car is allocated before you land, so you walk out to a driver instead of to the back of a rank. And a slow crawl on the M4 costs you nothing extra.

Heathrow handles more passengers than any other UK airport. Several hundred people can be waiting in the Terminal 5 arrivals hall at once, so a named meeting point matters more here than at the smaller London airports.

  • Licensed by Transport for London, with DBS-checked drivers
  • Fixed fare confirmed in writing before travel
  • Flight number tracked against live arrival data
  • 60 minutes of free waiting after the aircraft lands
  • Card, cash or business account accepted
  • Booking line answered 24 hours a day

How much is a taxi from Heathrow?

A saloon to central London is £80, and prices rise with distance and vehicle size. The figure quoted is per vehicle, not per passenger, so four people travelling together pay the same as one. Nothing is added afterwards. The Heathrow to London taxi transfer page covers that run in detail, and the longer journeys have their own pages: Heathrow to Oxford, Heathrow to Reading, Heathrow to Cambridge and Heathrow to Southampton.

Which Heathrow terminals do we cover?

Terminals 2, 3, 4 and 5 are all served, arriving and departing. Tell us your flight number and we'll work out the terminal ourselves, which matters when airlines move between them at short notice.

Terminals 2 and 3 sit in the Central Terminal Area and share an approach. Terminal 4 lies south of the runways, Terminal 5 to the west, and each needs a separate run off the perimeter road. So getting the terminal right at booking saves ten minutes at the other end. Your flight number tells us the terminal, and your airline shows it on your booking.

01

Terminal 2 (Queen's Terminal)

The main home of Star Alliance airlines at Heathrow. Arrivals exit into the Central Terminal Area.

02

Terminal 3

Mostly long-haul flights. Shares the Central Terminal Area with T2, a short walk apart.

03

Terminal 4

Reached by its own spur road south of the runways, separate from the other three terminals.

04

Terminal 5

The home of British Airways at Heathrow, at the western edge of the airport. Arriving passengers come out in the main terminal building.

What's included

What the Heathrow fare covers

Covered in the quoted price is everything the journey actually costs, which is why the number you see at booking is the number you pay.

  • Airport drop-off charge of £7 for a 10 minute stay
  • Car park fees on meet and greet arrivals
  • Congestion charge and ULEZ where the route crosses either zone
  • Road tolls including the Dartford Crossing when the route uses it
  • VAT at the standard rate
  • Waiting time of 60 minutes from the moment the aircraft lands

For how the charge works and what it costs, read Heathrow drop-off charge explained.

Arrivals

Where does the driver meet you?

Arrivals are served by one of two pickup types. Meet and greet places the driver inside the terminal; a standard pickup meets you at the designated pickup point outside.

Vehicle choice

Which vehicle do you need?

Choose by passenger count first, then by luggage. Count pushchairs, ski bags and golf clubs as large cases. Under-filling a vehicle is the most common cause of a transfer going wrong at the kerb.

Taxi, Heathrow Express or the Piccadilly line?

Heathrow Express reaches Paddington in 15 minutes and beats a car on raw speed every time. But Paddington is rarely where anyone is actually going. Add the walk to the platform, the wait, then a tube or cab at the far end with luggage, and the door-to-door gap narrows sharply.

Piccadilly line trains cost least and take around 50 minutes to Piccadilly Circus. The Elizabeth line sits between the two. A car wins with more than one case, with children, after midnight, or heading anywhere that isn't a rail terminus. Group size then decides the vehicle class.
