Overview

What is a Heathrow to Cambridge transfer?

Heathrow and Cambridge are on opposite sides of London, and every way of making the trip has to get round the capital or through it. Taxiqo drives it from £160 in a saloon, priced and fixed when you book, from the arrivals hall to a college, the Biomedical Campus, the Science Park or your front door.

The drive is 72 to 77 miles and never enters London. The car takes the M25 clockwise round the north of the capital to junction 27, then the M11 north, leaving at junction 11 for Addenbrooke's and the south of the city, or at junction 12 or 13 for the colleges and West Cambridge. Allow 90 to 130 minutes and off-peak it is about 1 hour 35. The part to leave time for is the northern M25 at peak times.

In Cambridge the destination is as often a hospital or a lab as a college. The Cambridge Biomedical Campus, with Addenbrooke's and Royal Papworth hospitals, sits on the southern edge of the city a short way from the M11. Cambridge Science Park is on the northern edge by the A14. Then there are students and families arriving at a college for the start of term, business travellers and people simply going home.

Further down are the fares by vehicle, how pickup works at Heathrow, where we drop off in each part of Cambridge, what the price covers, and how a car compares with the train across London and the coach. The questions at the end cover crossing London, Addenbrooke's, Science Park fares, whether Stansted would be closer, delayed flights and the trip back.

Why book a car

Why take a car from Heathrow to Cambridge

By train you go through London. That means the Elizabeth line into the centre and a change there for a Cambridge train, with your luggage, roughly 2 to 2.5 hours in all, and Cambridge station is south-east of the centre, so the colleges and the Science Park are another journey again.

Direct coaches avoid the change, but they keep to a timetable and set stops and take roughly 2.5 to 3 hours. A private airport transfer takes the M25 and the M11 without stopping and leaves you at the door you give us.

Terminals

Pickup at Heathrow, drop-off across Cambridge

The driver meets you at whichever Heathrow terminal your flight uses. We read it from your flight number, and it is on your booking confirmation too.

In Cambridge, the M11 runs down the west side of the city, so Addenbrooke's in the south and the western side of the city, by Barton Road and Madingley Road, are quick to reach. The Science Park in the north is reached from the A14. Some central streets are closed to through traffic, so for a college we stop at the porters' lodge, or as close to it as a car can get.

  • Heathrow arrivalsMeet and greet drivers wait inside the arrivals hall of Terminals 2, 3, 4 or 5 with a name board. Car park charges are inside the fare.
  • Heathrow forecourtStandard pickups use the designated pickup area at each terminal. The driver sends the exact spot once they are there.
  • Colleges and the city centre£160 in a saloon. Give us the college and we go to the porters' lodge, or the nearest point a car is allowed to stop.
  • Addenbrooke's and the Biomedical Campus (CB2)Addenbrooke's, Royal Papworth and the research buildings on the campus. It is a large site with many entrances, so tell us the building or department.
  • Science Park, West Cambridge and elsewhereCambridge Science Park (CB4), the university's West Cambridge site, Cambridge station and every other part of the city. Enter the address for the exact fixed fare.

Car, coach or train to Cambridge?

The direct coach needs no change, but with a timetable and stops it takes roughly 2.5 to 3 hours against 90 to 130 minutes by car. It saves money rather than time; travelling alone with one bag, that can be the right trade.

The train is quicker than the coach, at roughly 2 to 2.5 hours, but it takes you through central London with one change and your luggage. It arrives at Cambridge station, south-east of the centre, so the colleges, the Science Park and West Cambridge are a further taxi or bus.

A car is the better choice for a group, for heavy luggage, or for anyone due at the Biomedical Campus or the Science Park on a working day. Six people sharing a V-Class people carrier at £290 pay about £48 each, door to door.

Booking

Booking a Heathrow to Cambridge transfer

Give us your flight number and the full Cambridge address with its postcode. For the Biomedical Campus or the Science Park, add the building, company or department and for a college, the college name, so the driver goes to the right porters' lodge.

  1. 1

    Enter the journey

Put Heathrow as the pickup and your Cambridge postcode as the destination, CB2 for Addenbrooke's and the Biomedical Campus, and CB4 for the Science Park. The fare returns instantly and does not change afterwards.

  2. 2

    Add your flight number

This is what we track. If the flight lands early or late, the pickup moves with it at no extra charge.

  3. 3

    Choose a vehicle

On a drive of this length, room matters. A saloon takes two large cases, while equipment, samples or a family's luggage needs an estate, a V-Class or larger.

  4. 4

    Confirm and travel

You get written confirmation with the fare and the driver's details. Pay by card, cash or business account.
