Overview

What is a Stansted taxi transfer?

A Stansted taxi transfer is a booked private hire journey linking London Stansted (STN) with an address you nominate, priced before departure. Taxiqo quotes these from £90 in a saloon holding four people and two large cases.

Stansted stands 40 miles north-east of the city in Essex, off junction 8 of the M11. Allow 55 to 80 minutes into central London, and a little longer if the North Circular is heavy. Unlike Heathrow and Gatwick, the airport works from one passenger terminal, so there's no terminal to confuse and no shuttle to catch. Arrivals empty into a single hall with one authorised pickup area alongside.

Vehicles carry private hire plates and drivers hold the matching licence. Stansted's £10 drop-off charge covers a 15 minute stay and is folded into the quote, along with M11 running costs, the congestion charge on routes crossing it, ULEZ and VAT. Overstay 15 minutes at the terminal and the charge jumps to a flat £28, which is a reason to have someone waiting rather than circling.

Read on for Stansted fares by destination, from Cambridge to Luton Airport, how the single-terminal layout works in practice, vehicle sizing by group and baggage, the full list of what the fare absorbs, a straight comparison against the Stansted Express, and how to reserve. The FAQ covers night flights, coach alternatives, Cambridge runs, luggage capacity and cancellation.

Why Taxiqo

Why a booked car beats the rank at Stansted

Distance is the argument here. Forty miles on a meter is a fare nobody can predict, and Stansted's traffic through the M11 and M25 junction swings widely by the hour. A pre-agreed number takes that risk off you and puts it on the operator.

Late arrivals are the other reason. Stansted handles a lot of early-morning and late-night low-cost traffic, and the rank thins out badly outside normal hours. A car booked in advance is there regardless.

  • Licensed operator with vetted, DBS-checked drivers
  • Single agreed fare, sent in writing
  • Flight tracked by number against live arrivals
  • 60 minutes of waiting included after landing
  • Cards, cash and account billing all accepted
  • Phones staffed through the night
Fixed prices

Stansted transfer prices

Prices begin at £90 for a saloon to Chelmsford, and a saloon into the capital is £120. The quote covers the vehicle, not the seat, so a couple and a family of four pay identically. No unsociable-hours surcharge applies.

How pickup works at a single-terminal airport

Terminal arrangements at Stansted are refreshingly simple next to Heathrow and Gatwick, the largest of the London airports we serve. One building handles every flight, so the only decision is where in that building you meet your driver.

Arrivals come out into the main hall on the ground floor, with the express coach station and the short-stay car park a short walk beyond. Meet and greet puts the driver inside the hall itself. A standard pickup sends you to the designated area outside, and the driver messages the bay once you're through customs.

Ground floor, where meet and greet drivers wait with a name board. The busiest point in the building.

02

Designated pickup area

A short walk from arrivals, used for standard pickups. Your driver sends the bay number by text.

03

Short-stay car park

Parking used on meet and greet bookings. The fee is already inside your fare.

What's included

Everything the price absorbs

Absorbed into the quoted figure is each cost the run creates, which is what keeps the booking number and the final number identical.

  • Terminal forecourt fee of £10, covering a 15 minute stay
  • Car park charges when meet and greet is selected
  • Tolls on any routing that uses the Dartford Crossing
  • Congestion charge and ULEZ where the journey enters them
  • VAT at the standard rate
  • Sixty minutes of free waiting timed from touchdown

Vehicle choice

Which vehicle do you need?

Choose by passenger count first, then by luggage. Count pushchairs, ski bags and golf clubs as large cases. Under-filling a vehicle is the most common cause of a transfer going wrong at the kerb.

Road, Stansted Express or coach?

Stansted Express reaches Liverpool Street in 48 minutes and leaves every quarter of an hour. That's genuinely quick, and for a solo traveller heading into the City it's hard to argue against.

Coaches undercut both on price and take roughly 90 minutes to Victoria, which suits an unhurried budget trip. But neither serves a doorstep, and Liverpool Street at 06:00 with two cases and a child is its own kind of problem. Road transport holds its ground on early departures, group travel and anywhere off the Greater Anglia line, and the group size sets the vehicle.
