London's easternmost airport, priced before you travel. One small terminal, no shuttle, and a car waiting at the door.
A Southend taxi transfer is a booked private hire journey between London Southend Airport (SEN) and an address you name, at a fare agreed before travel. Taxiqo prices these from £70 in a saloon seating four.
Southend sits on the Essex coast, 42 miles east of central London and further out than any other airport carrying the city's name. Allow 70 to 95 minutes by road, almost all of it on the A127 and A13 corridor rather than the M25, so the slow stretches are different from those on a Gatwick or Stansted run.
The airport works from one small terminal that opened in 2012, handling around two million passengers a year at its busiest. The walk from arrivals to the forecourt is short, and with one terminal there is no inter-terminal shuttle to think about, unlike at the two largest of the London airports we serve.
Drivers hold private hire licences and vehicles carry the matching plate. Southend's £8 drop-off charge covers a 10 minute stay and is already inside the quoted fare, along with tolls, the Dartford Crossing where a route uses it, and VAT.
What follows sets out what each Southend run costs, how pickup works at the single terminal, choosing a vehicle for your party, everything the fare takes in, an honest read on the train against a car, and the booking process. The questions at the end cover delayed landings, the rail option, luggage, early departures and cancellations.
Distance is the argument here. Forty-two miles is far enough that a metered fare becomes a real unknown, and far enough that being left without a car at 06:00 is a genuine problem rather than an inconvenience.
The counterweight is that Southend is an easy airport to be collected from. One terminal, a short walk, and a forecourt immediately outside. Once the fare is fixed, the rest of the journey looks after itself.
A saloon running to central London is £130. The price covers the car rather than the seat, so four passengers travelling together pay the same as one.
| Destination | Vehicle | Journey time | Fixed fare |
|---|---|---|---|
| Central London | Saloon | 70 to 95 min | £130 |
| Southend-on-Sea | Saloon | 10 to 20 min | £70 |
| Basildon | Saloon | 25 to 40 min | £75 |
| Chelmsford | Saloon | 35 to 50 min | £80 |
| Stansted Airport | Saloon | 55 to 80 min | £120 |
| Canary Wharf | Saloon | 60 to 85 min | £120 |
Southend is a simple airport to be met at. Arrivals and departures share one building, the walk from the aircraft to the exit is measured in minutes rather than corridors, and the forecourt sits directly outside.
Road access comes off the A127 and Eastwoodbury Lane. That approach is quiet compared with the M25 airports, though the A127 itself slows through Rayleigh at peak, which is worth allowing for on a departure rather than an arrival.
One building for every flight. Meet and greet drivers wait inside the arrivals area with a name board.
Immediately outside arrivals, used for standard pickups. The bay number comes by text.
On the airport site, a short covered walk from the terminal. Trains to Liverpool Street via Shenfield.
The main road link towards London and the M25, and the stretch to allow extra time on for a departure.
Taken into the quoted figure is each cost the journey creates, so the amount shown at booking is the amount paid at the end.
Arrivals are served by one of two pickup types. Meet and greet places the driver inside the terminal; a standard pickup meets you at the designated pickup point outside.
Choose by passenger count first, then by luggage. Count pushchairs, ski bags and golf clubs as large cases. Under-filling a vehicle is the most common cause of a transfer going wrong at the kerb.
| Vehicle | Passengers | Large cases | Example | From |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Saloon | Up to 4 | 2 large cases | Toyota Prius or similar | £70 |
| Estate | Up to 4 | 4 large cases | VW Passat Estate or similar | £75 |
| Mercedes E-Class | Up to 3 | 2 large cases | Mercedes E-Class or similar | £80 |
| Mercedes S-Class | Up to 3 | 2 large cases | Mercedes S-Class or similar | £110 |
| Mercedes V-Class | Up to 6 | 6 large cases | Mercedes V-Class or similar | £110 |
| 8 Seater | Up to 8 | 8 large cases | Mercedes Vito or similar | £80 |
| 16 Seater Minibus | Up to 16 | 16 cases | Mercedes Sprinter or similar | £465.60 |
| Range Rover | Up to 4 | 3 large cases | Range Rover or similar | £200 |
Very easy to book and the price was clear from the start. The driver was professional and the vehicle was clean. I would definitely use TAXIQO again.
Every vehicle is licensed, insured and fixed-price. Filter by class to see the models, luggage capacity and passenger count.
Southend Airport station is on the airport site, a couple of minutes' covered walk from the terminal, and trains reach Liverpool Street in about 53 minutes.
For a single traveller with hand luggage heading into the City, that is genuinely hard to beat. The calculation turns on party size, bags and which vehicle class fits them: three people with checked cases pay three fares, change at the far end, and finish the journey by tube. One car at £130 takes them to the door, and on an early departure or a late landing it does not depend on the train timetable.
